"Underdog Story:
Ex-MLB All-Star's Horse Beats 17-1 Odds to Win Belmont Stakes"
Despite the
initial prediction falling short, Dornoch defied the odds and fulfilled that
optimism by clinching victory in the first Belmont Stakes held at Saratoga.
With a strategic run along the rail, Dornoch held off Mind frame, securing a
significant upset in the Triple Crown finale at remarkable 17-1 odds.
Just five
weeks after a turbulent journey resulted in a disappointing 10th-place finish
at the Kentucky Derby, the horse co-owned by World Series champion Jayson Werth
claimed victory at the Belmont. Dornoch strategically positioned itself behind
leader Seize the Grey, surged past the Preakness winner in the final stretch,
and maintained a lead to secure a 1 1/2-length triumph.
Jayson
Werth, a Major League Baseball champion with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008,
expressed his exhilaration, likening the Belmont victory to triumphing on the
grandest stage. He emphasized the undervalued status of horse racing, declaring
it as the pinnacle of sports. Winning the Belmont, alongside the Derby and the
Preakness, encapsulates the zenith of achievement in both horse racing and
sports in general.
This triumph
marks Gargan's inaugural win in any Triple Crown race and the second for Saez
in the Belmont. Saez reaffirmed his unwavering belief in Dornoch, emphasizing
the horse's standing as one of the top 3-year-olds in the nation. Gargan echoed
this sentiment, expressing confidence in Dornoch's abilities and emphasizing
the importance of allowing the horse to race freely, knowing that when given
the chance, Dornoch is a formidable contender.
For the
sixth year running, the Triple Crown races have seen a different horse emerge
victorious in each event. Despite being the favorite, Sierra Leone, the
runner-up at the Derby, settled for third place, while Honor Marie secured
fourth position.
